Conservation & Renewal of School Nature Area

Project Objectives:

SJHS presently have an underutilized outdoor classroom situated on the side of Smith’s Creek, which runs 13 kilometers from a local lake, Hurd’s Lake, and empties into the Bonnechere River which flows directly into the Ottawa River. We are located about 3 kilometers from where the creek empties into the Bonnechere River. The classroom is an open-air gazebo with a metal roof which was built by our school’s Construction Technology class but is overgrown and the pathway from the school to the classroom needs serious maintenance.

SJHS would like to clean up the creek and plant native shrubbery and plants around the creek and around our school. We would also like to maintain the pathway and promote the usage of the outdoor classroom and at the same time promote the importance of understanding the sensitive nature of ecology areas such as this.
