Re-naturalizing Marginal Farmland in Peterborough & Kawartha Lakes

Project objectives:

ALUS Canada is a national, community-developed, and farmer-delivered program, which supports farmers and ranchers to enhance marginal farmland and produce ecosystem services on the working landscape.

ALUS Peterborough program coordinator works with farmers to identify select parcels of environmentally sensitive, marginal land that could be stewarded differently to contribute to cleaner air, cleaner water, and increased biodiversity. ALUS Peterborough supports farmer participants through the process of ALUS project approval and implementation, contributes to the delivery of the project (e.g., project design, material costs), and then provides participants with annual, per-acre payments for the maintenance and management of ALUS projects on their land. ALUS Peterborough aims to establish acres of native prairie, pollinator habitat, multi-row shelterbelts, reforestation, enhanced and expanded riparian areas, watering systems, nesting structures, and fencing around waterbodies, as well as the restoration or enhancement of wetlands, in the Peterborough County and City of Kawartha Lakes regions. These conservation efforts aim to perpetuate abundant stocks of birds, fish, and animals.
